Abstract
Islamism has become one of the most prominent objects of study in politics and International Relations in the last thirty years. Similarly, this phenomenon has attracted the attention of the international press and the general public in the Western world. Nevertheless, the image that has been configured about Islamism, as well as about Islam, seems to be based on generalizations and stigma. This document offers an approximation to the topic by exploring the characteristics of some of the most representative Islamist movements as well as exposing the political and social contexts in which these groups have originated and developed. The analysis of these organizations also focuses on the role that they play in the current international arena.
