Abstract

This article critically examines the use of the Treaty of Tordesillas as a symbol representing Latin America. It posits that, while calls to abolish the demarcation line and dismantle barriers aim to foster greater regional integration, they inadvertently sustain colonial legacies within literary and cultural studies. The central argument contends that the primary challenge lies not in the removal of the line or the destruction of the wall, but in relinquishing the Treaty of Tordesillas as a symbol. The continued reliance on this symbol perpetuates and exacerbates existing divisions. The article points to the historical significance of the Treaty of Tordesillas in the development of cartography and its impact on contemporary understandings of territorial boundaries as a framework for analyzing how the colonization of physical space translates into the colonization of literary and cultural traditions.
