Focus and Scope

Ingeniería y Ciencia  provides a space for the dissemination of research results in basic sciences and their application to development and innovation in Engineering. The scope of submissions accepted for publication is limited to the following main fields: Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Conservation, Digital Signal Processing, Earthquake Engineering and Seismology,  Electrical Engineering, Geology, Optics, Statistics, Telecommunications and Telematics.

In Ingeniería y Ciencia:

• Receipt of contributions is permanent.
• Manuscripts can be published in English or Spanish.
• The article shall be presented through the Open Journal System (Information for Authors - Submissions)
• Initially it is not necessary that they share the same format of the journal. We recommend sending the article in PDF without the information relating the authors. However, if the article is accepted, the author is responsible for submitting his/her article in LATEX, taking into account the format proposed by the journal (download a sample article in LATEX).
• The submitted manuscript should follow basic standards of presentation, be unpublished, original, resulting from a research and must not be participating at the same time in another editorial evaluation process.

Reception and Evaluation of Manuscripts

The Managing Editor verifies if the paper is relevant to the scopus of the journal and complies with the minimum characteristics of content requested in the section About the Article of this guide; they are also referred to in the section Guide for Authors.

The Editor-in-Chief  has until within 30 working days (from the date of receipt) to respond to the authors its decision to send the manuscript for assessment or reject it. The editorial board will not know the names of the authors at the time of evaluating manuscripts.

The factors on which the decision is based for the acceptation or rejection of the works by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal are as follows:

• Originality and novelty
• Usefulness and interest
• Clarity of presentation and methodological rigor
• Foundation of the conclusions
• Relevance

If the paper is not accepted for evaluation, the authors are told about the reasons. In case it is not accepted for evaluation, but it is considered relevant for the journal, this one invites the authors to a re-submission of the paper.

In case of withdrawal of the manuscript, the author shall timely inform it to the Editor-in-Chief in  who will withdraw it from the evaluation process and will be in charge of protecting the information sent by the author.

Expert reviewers in the field are contacted and we request an evaluation if the article:

• Has not been submitted to another journal at the same time or lies wholly or partially released.
• Must submit a new knowledge or analyze facts previously known novel way.
• Be relevant to the scope of the magazine and if interest raises innovative and useful for the practice of engineering knowledge.
• Meets the standards of presentation that were presented in this site.
• Sent full domuntation (originality letter and cover letter)
• Avoid plagiarism, self subpoena or summons irregular and meet other ethical standards of publication referred to in http://publicaciones.eafit.edu.co/index.php/ingciencia/Code. 

Usually, the evaluators are external to the publishing institution and the committees of the journal.

The author may know the comments and criticisms of the reviewers, but without knowing their names and origin.

Based on the results of the evaluations, the document:

• Is rejected for publication,
• Must be corrected and resent for assessment,
• Must be corrected and no assessment is required again, or
• Is accepted for publication.

When corrections are required, the authors make them or refute them. Then, the authors return the manuscript to the Managing Editor (ingciencia@eafit.edu.co). The Editor-in-Chief checks and settles the matters if the authors have refuted and if no further assessment is needed. Then publication is accepted or rejected.

If the article is accepted for publication, the author must make typographic and style corrections, as well as convert it to the format of the journal (LATEX) as indicated in the Guide for authors.

The Managing Editor reviews the final version, corrects and sends it to the correspondent author for its final approval.

The Managing Editor will report to the author about the outcome of the evaluation in a period not exceeding six months, through the Coordinator of the journal. Normally, the process, since the author sends his document until the article is assessed, takes between five and ten months. It should be taken into account that these times may be shorter or longer depending on the difficulty to get external evaluators and their willingness to evaluate the manuscripts within the proposed time.

If an article that has been approved for publication may not be published in any of the next two issues of the journal, the Coordinator shall inform the author about the reasons.

The type of articles that are consider for evaluation and publication are:

Guide for authors

On the content

• The author must indicate their institutional affiliation (School, Department, Institute, etc). If you belong to a research group, indicate it correctly, as well as your institutional e-mail address, city, country and ORCID. It is important that the author retains an unique form of signature throughout his entire professional career to avoid the loss of part of their production. 
• All manuscripts should bear a title, a summary and key words in Spanish and English.
• Codes PACS or MSC 2010 must be included
• In the summary, you comment, clearly and without humility, the contribution you make to the studied area. It should also contain a scientific context of the problem addressed and resolved, limitations of the prior approaches to the present work, advantages of the present work and future lines of work.
• Keep in mind that the possibility that a manuscript can be found and used depends in good measure on its accuracy -using words that communicate exactly what you want to say-; on its clarity -the text is read and understood quickly-; on its brevity -including only information relevant to the content of the manuscript; and on the clarity of the translations of the titles, abstracts and keywords. On the importance of a good title for your manuscript we suggest the following article>>
• Every manuscript should have an introduction and/or a literature review with taxonomy of the revised bibliography, covering publications of articles in the past 10 years. Classic quotes and books are allowed but do not replace the review of recent research. The conclusion of this section must be the justification of the proposal presented in the article, i.e., the response of the present article to overcome the limitations found in the bibliographic review.
• There should be a  methodology section that should support the final proposal of the second point in a formal manner. Theorems, lemmas, postulates, notation, glossary, algorithms, graphs, mathematical graphs, functions, equations, etc., must be formally discussed in this section with enough formalism to avoid ambiguity in what is understood by the reader. Where lemmas or theorems are not demonstrated, this must be explicitly mentioned and proposed as an object of another publication, or referred to a quote where they are resolved.
• There should equally be a section of Results and Discussion where the properly organized results of the implementation of actions and algorithms in the previous point are unfolded. Graphs, equations, tables, etc., should also be used here. This section should have an area of interpretation and criticism of what has been found or produced, with technical comments on the quality or limitations of the achieved results. Again, a serious technical discussion of the relationship between methodology and the results is also expected here.
• If your manuscript has an acknowledgements section, remember to correctly point out the names of those people, institutions and/or companies that collaborated in the realization of your  research. It is also recommended to include the information about the project which you are attached to and the Group of which you are a part, as well as the institution that supports it.
• In the conclusions section it is set out the general merit of the article and the future directions of research in the subject.
• In relation to the references, only those listed in document shall be included and they must strictly follow the citation model proposed by the journal.

The Writing

• The drafting is done in the third person of the impersonal mode.
• The texts must contain complete ideas and the derivations should form new sentences.
• Punctuation, accentuation and spelling should be consistent with the rules of the English language and its good use, when the paper is in English. Similar requirements when it is in Spanish.
• The estimated length of the texts is of 20-25 pages.
• Acronyms are explained the first time that they named for example: Corporación Autónoma Regional de las Cuencas de los Rios Negro y Nare (Cornare).
• Avoid the use of sustained uppercase and italics characters.
• Avoid abbreviations, for example, type “etcetera” and not “etc.”
• Footnotes are used only for clarifications or additional comments.
• When it comes to numbers, use comma for decimals. In LATEX they go between $$ with a dot.  LATEX automatically changes the dot into decimal with the appropriate space.
• For references within the document, they are done with a number between square brackets. In LATEX, use the command \cite{}. Examples: [1] or [9],[10]. At the end of the article the references are listed in the order they were quoted.

About Figures, tables, and equations

• Figures, tables and equations are placed after the paragraphs where they are referenced for the first time. In LATEX use the commands \ref{} for the call of figures and tables, and the command \eqref{} for the call of equations.
• To the creation of figures, tables and equations, use the commands \begin{figure}–\end{figure}, \begin{table}–\end{table} and \begin{align}–\end{align}, respectively.
• Photographs, images, maps and figures included in the document shall also be attached separately in EPS format with excellent quality.
• The caption of each figure is placed at its bottom; the caption of tables, at the top.
• Only those equations to which an explicit reference is made in the document are numbered.

References

The journal uses the IEEE citation style. Authors are strongly advised to use reference management software such as Zotero, Mendeley or End-Note.  The author must include in the LATEX package a.bib file with the complete references of the article.

Do not include links to Google books, ResearchGate or any other site other than the journal where the article was originally published. Include in scientific article references the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) link that leads directly to the journal where the article was published. The use of DOI will prevent the inclusion of links that are too long.

Compilation Method

For sending the article under the journal format (LATEX), we suggest the following method of compilation:

• Locate the TEX, the STY, and its figures in the same folder.
• From the DOS window, get into this folder.
• Compile: >latex ‘file name’
• Convert from DVI into PS: >dvips –z  ‘file name’
• The parameter –z, will make that in the conversion to PS file, the links be kept.
• Open the PS file, if you wish; convert this file into PDF: file-convert-accept-locate the desired folder and enter the name of the file with extension PDF-save.

Promotions and dissemination of papers 

Authors are expected to promote their own manuscripts once published, as well as the journal itself.  The authors should promote articles using their link from the journal’s official website (www.eafit.edu.co/ingciencia) with the DOI (10.17230/ingciencia...), in order to increase reading, citation and the impact of their articles.

Prior to final publication, it is advisable for authors to file their preprint version on their personal and institutional websites, scientific social networks, repositories, bibliographic managers... The preprint must include the following statement: "This is the electronic version of an article accepted for publication in Ingeniería y Ciencia [vol- issue/year], now available online on the official website through its DOI".

Once published, the authors must specify: "This is the electronic version of an article published in Ingeniería y Ciencia [vol-issue/year]. The final version is available at
the official website, on the date indicated in the preprint, through its DOI". Ingeniería y Ciencia encourages authors and the scientific community to generate the maximum promotion and dissemination of the final version of their work through: 
1) Contact (e-mails) and social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn…).
2) Institutional repository of their own University and public repositories (Mendeley…).
3) Scientific social networks (Academia.edu, ResearchGate, Kudos…).
4) The authors’ own websites or institutional website, blog, etc.
5) Google Scholar, ORCID, ResearchID, ScopusID, Dimensions, PlumX...
