Abstract

Child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church is a problem of great dimensions and universal
scope. The model of restorative transitional justice allows an adequate approach,
given the limitations of the criminal justice system to respond to the needs and rights
of victims. Some institutional responses adopted in various countries are close to the
aforementioned model, although the effectiveness of the special bodies or procedures
requires changes in attitude on the part of the Church and a commitment from the
institutions with restorative principles. The experience of the Belgian Arbitration
Center, despite certain limitations, is a good reference for other countries in which the
response to victims' demands for justice is still a pending issue.
