The Memory of Horror in Space. Landscapes of Fear and Geographies of Terror in Contemporary Mexican Cinema

Abstract
The article’s analysis draws upon a range of academic disciplines, including humanistic geography, urban sociology, and philosophy, to explore the depiction of violence engendered by organized crime in Mexico. It examines how Mexican films, Vuelven (Issa López, 2017) and Belzebuth (Emilio Portes, 2017), have captured and transformed spaces into sites of fear and terror. By examining these films, the article seeks to contribute to our understanding of the impact of organized crime on urban landscapes and the psychological impact of violence on individuals and communities. By conceptualizing cinema as a spatial system, the article demonstrates the potential of film analysis to address issues related to urban space and violence. Conversely, it also illustrates how horror films can unveil imaginary geographies of societies experiencing processes of violence that have impacted their daily lives and the sense of security in urban space.
