The Holocaust, the Nakba, and the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: Memory and Identity in First-Person Documentary Cinema from Argentina

Abstract
This article examines three first-person documentary films from Argentina that, in the process of biographical (de)construction by their filmmakers, explore the building of imaginaries surrounding Jewishness, Israel, the memory of the Holocaust, the reception of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and the representation of the Nakba. The films analyzed are Nosotros, ellos y yo (Nicolás Avruj, 2015), Bajar, subir, bajar (Elad Abraham, 2022), and Hemshej (Julieta Lande, 2024). In methodological terms, the article proposes an analysis of the three documentaries focusing on their motifs and narrative functions. In this regard, their narrative structure are exposed in a particularized manner, with the intention of delving into the construction of discourses, memories, and identities related to Jewishness and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as well as the shared agendas and questions specific to their historical context and place of enunciation. Secondly, we establish some lines of reflection anchored in the comparative analysis of the language and strategies inherent to first-person documentary filmmaking, and their implications in the process of identity and political construction. The cinematographic analysis allows us to consider the potential of the modulations of the self in the configuration of subjective and collective identities, and how the representation of personal history enables the deconstruction of totalizing narrative systems.
