Abstract

This article examines the early piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven as essential pieces in the pianistic repertoire in the history of academic music. This research emerges from the recent publication (2007) of the complete set of the 35 sonatas for piano in a critical edition by Professor Barry Cooper, a recognized Beethoven specialist. This is the only modern edition that includes the three sonatas WoO 47 as well as the 32 remaining, already known, sonatas. Our review aims to gather information about Beethoven's three Sonatas WoO 47 and the importance of these compositions in the composer's piano repertoire. This article seeks to justify the inclusion of these works in the catalog of the complete piano sonatas by the German composer, through the compilation of sources and the assessment of the technical difficulties of the pieces for the instrument
