Abstract
In this article, I examine Theodore Adorno’s ideas on the musical material in Stravinsky’s oeuvre, and the analysis that French philosopher René Girard makes of myth. Girard’s philosophical thought enables me to reexamine Stravinsky’s work and comprehend the impact of staging the foundational murder at the brink of the 20th century. The structure of sacrificial violence that Girard delineates, expands a hermeneutic of The Rite of Spring by offering an anthropological reading of the musical work. In such a way, the critical perspective that Girard’s thought opens constitutes a contextualization of Stravinsky’s work that goes beyond an analysis of the sedimentation of musical materials.
